Single Garage Door Replacement Cost
$750–$1,900
$1,065–$2,700
3–5 hrs
A full replacement for a one-car opening, including removal of the old door. Material and insulation drive the price far more than labour does.
Why it fails
Non-insulated steel sits at the bottom of the range. Insulated steel adds meaningfully to comfort in an attached garage and is the most common choice. Carriage-house styling, hardwood, and glass-and-aluminium designs run to the top. Windows, decorative hardware, and non-standard sizing all add.
Expected life 20 to 30 years for steel, less for wood without maintenance
What you are paying for
Non-insulated steel at the bottom, insulated steel mid, carriage-house and wood at the top. Includes haul-away of the old door from most installers — confirm it.
Signs you need this
- Multiple panels damaged or the door is rusting through
- Repeated repairs on a door past twenty years
- Wood that is rotting at the bottom rail
- You want insulation, quieter operation, or a different look
Can you do it yourself?
Not a homeowner job
Installation involves setting the track, hanging the door, and winding springs matched to its weight. Springs sized wrong for a new door will destroy the opener and make the door dangerous to lift by hand.

Common questions
Is an insulated door worth the extra?
On an attached garage, or one with living space above, generally yes — it is quieter as well as warmer, and the R-value affects the room above more than most people expect. On a detached unheated garage the case is much weaker.
Does the price include taking the old door away?
Usually, but confirm it explicitly. Haul-away and disposal is a common line to find added afterwards.
Will my existing opener work with the new door?
Normally yes, provided the springs are sized to the new door's weight and the opener is healthy. Ask for the balance to be set and demonstrated with the new door before the technician leaves.
