Common questions
How much does it cost to fix a garage door?
Most single-issue garage door repairs land between $130 and $480 installed. Spring replacement — the most common failure — runs $185 to $480 depending on whether one or both springs are done. Opener replacement is the main exception at $380 to $850, and a full door runs $750 to $3,400.
Why did I get quoted so much more than this?
The three usual reasons are location, urgency, and stacked repairs. Labour in New York or California runs roughly 30% above the national median, an after-hours emergency call adds around 40%, and a broken spring frequently takes the cables with it. If a quote is far outside this range with none of those factors, get a second one.
Is a garage door spring something I can replace myself?
No. A torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury or death when released without the correct winding bars and technique. It is the one repair on this list that professionals consistently tell homeowners not to attempt.
Should I repair or replace my garage door?
Repair is almost always the better spend for springs, cables, rollers, and openers. Replacement starts making sense once three or more panels are damaged, the door is structurally rotted or rusted through, or repeated repairs on a door past 20 years are adding up to a meaningful share of a new one.
