Garage Door Remote & Keypad Replacement Cost
$60–$180
$85–$255
0.25–0.75 hrs
The cheapest thing on this list, and the one most worth trying yourself before paying a service call.
Why it fails
Remotes and keypads fail for mundane reasons: dead batteries, lost pairing after a power cut, worn keypad buttons, or weather getting into an exterior keypad. Occasionally the opener's receiver is the actual fault, which turns it into an opener repair.
Expected life Remotes 5 to 10 years; keypads shorter if exposed to weather
What you are paying for
Frequently a battery or a re-pair to the opener. Worth trying yourself before paying a service call.
Signs you need this
- The remote works close to the door but not from the driveway
- The keypad lights up but the door does not respond
- One remote works and another does not
- Nothing responds after a power outage
Can you do it yourself?
Worth trying yourself
Start with a fresh battery, then re-pair the remote using the Learn button on the opener motor unit — the sequence is in the manual and usually on a sticker under the light cover. Most callouts for this turn out to be one of those two things.

Common questions
Will any universal remote work with my opener?
Most modern universal remotes cover the major brands, but rolling-code openers need a compatible model. Check the brand and the approximate age of the opener before buying.
My remote only works up close. What does that mean?
Usually a weak battery or a degraded antenna wire on the opener. Replace the battery first; if the range is still short, check that the thin antenna wire hanging from the motor unit is intact and hanging freely rather than coiled up.
